For people living with keratoconus, everyday vision can feel like a constant battle—blurred edges, distorted images, and discomfort from standard lenses. At Premier Vision Care Optometrists, our team understands these challenges and offers advanced solutions like scleral lenses to help patients regain clear vision and confidence. But if you’re new to scleral lenses, you may feel uncertain about what the process involves. Let’s walk through a typical first fitting to help you feel prepared and at ease.
Measuring Your Vision and Eye Shape
Your first visit begins with a thorough evaluation of your vision and current eyewear. We start by assessing your uncorrected vision, then check how well you see with your existing prescription. Next, we determine your best-correctable vision with glasses to use as a benchmark.
Then comes corneal and scleral topography. Using advanced imaging, we capture detailed maps of the front of your eye—including both the cornea and the sclera. These maps are crucial for designing lenses that match the unique shape of your eye and the severity of your keratoconus.
Trying on Trial Lenses
Once we’ve gathered the data, you’ll try on a pair of trial scleral lenses during your visit. This allows you to experience how the lens feels on your eye and gives us a sense of how well it fits. Because these lenses vault over the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye, most patients find them surprisingly comfortable—especially compared to traditional gas-permeable lenses.
We’ll also show you a simulation of what your corrected vision could look like through the trial lens. It’s often the first glimpse of clarity that keratoconus patients have had in years.
What Happens After the Initial Fit?
After the fitting, your custom lenses are ordered. It typically takes about two weeks for them to arrive. You’ll then return for your dispensing appointment. This 45-minute session is dedicated to training—you’ll learn how to safely insert, remove, clean, and store your lenses. We’ll also cover important techniques to help you avoid air bubbles, which can form if the lens isn’t filled with saline correctly or inserted at the wrong angle.
If touching your eye makes you nervous, don’t worry—you’re not alone. We take time to help patients grow comfortable with handling their lenses by practicing with their eyelids and building confidence step by step.
Fine-Tuning and Follow-Up
We schedule at least one follow-up visit within a week or two of dispensing your lenses. These check-ins help us fine-tune the fit and prescription as needed. Most patients only need about two or three visits in total, but we’re here for as many as it takes to get things just right.
Worried about cost? Our global fitting fee includes the lenses themselves and the follow-ups required to perfect your fit, so you won’t be hit with surprise charges.
Life with Scleral Lenses
During the first week of wearing your new lenses, we recommend gradually increasing your wear time—starting with just a few hours and working up from there. It’s normal for the lenses to feel a bit unusual at first, but your eyes will adjust with time.
If you ever experience discomfort or vision fogging, it’s best to remove the lenses and give us a call. Your follow-up visits are also a great time to share any concerns, so we can troubleshoot and optimize your lenses together.
Once you’re fully adapted, you can confidently wear your scleral lenses for full days—including while driving at night.
